Vertical Farming and the future of Agriculture
Class Purpose:
The purpose of the class is to illuminate emerging agricultural technologies, and examine the current state of our global food sources
What Will People Learn From the Class:
People will learn about where our food comes from, how the current food system works, and how new technology can help us to have a better relationship with our food sources.
Class Agenda, including estimated time for each topic:
- History of agriculture (10 minutes)
- Vertical farming (30 minutes)
- A new way to understand sustainable food sources (30 minutes)
- Questions (15 minutes)

Teacher:
Simon Yevzelman began his career as a microbiologist working in food safety laboratories developing tests to keep food safe. He discovered a passion for farming by keeping an at-home fish tank. He earned his undergraduate degree in microbiology from the University of Michigan. He traveled to Scotland, the University of Stirling, where he earned a master’s degree in sustainable aquaculture and is now the Director of Food Safety and Compliance at Planted Detroit, a vertical farm growing leafy greens, herbs, and microgreens. Simon is elected representative of national young farmers federal coalition (NYFC) federal policy council.
